Verywell Fit / Tamara Staples

Breakouts don’t have to be a side effect of exercise with the right skincare routine. If your pores get clogged every time you work out, your face moisturizer may be to blame, says dermatologist Hadley King, MD-FAAD. And luckily, you can find a new one that hydrates your skin without causing build-up or breakouts. The best face moisturizers are non-comedogenic—or designed to not clog your pores. If you really struggle with clogged pores, you may also want a moisturizer with added pore-clearing ingredients, like salicylic acid, says dermatologist Noreen Galaria, MD-FAAD.

To find the best moisturizer for your skin type and budget, we first spoke with five experts to learn more about what key ingredients to look for when shopping. Then, we put 64 face moisturizers to the test in The Verywell Testing Lab and at home. We tested 29 moisturizers for oily skin and 35 moisturizers for dry skin, evaluating each for texture, absorption, dryness or oiliness, appearance, and overall value. We also had an emergency physician from our Review Board review this story for accuracy, including how to safely shop for an effective face moisturizer.

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, ceramides (AP, AS, EOP, NG, NP), squalane | Skin Type: Normal, dry, oily, combination, sensitive, acne-prone | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Size: 3 ounces | SPF: No

Who It's For

Best for all skin types and ages, including acne-prone and sensitive skin, especially if you want a lightweight and budget-friendly moisturizer.

Why We Love It

Vanicream’s Daily Facial Moisturizer offers better value than any other product we tested. Infused with hyaluronic acid, squalane, and five different ceramides, this lotion not only hydrates but also effectively seals in moisture. It’s also free of pore-clogging ingredients and never leaves our skin feeling greasy or oily, even after intense exercise.

The lightweight moisturizer is easy to apply and absorbs quickly. Within just 15 minutes after application, our skin looked and felt more hydrated. What sets it apart is its sheer texture, allowing seamless layering under thicker lotions in colder months if needed. Plus, it's one of the most versatile options on our list, with a fragrance-free and sensitive-skin-friendly formula. At a such budget-friendly price, we think it's a steal.

Potential Flaws

  • The moisturizer felt slightly sticky in the seasonal humidity, but this didn't affect its overall performance.

Key Specs

Key Ingredients: Salicylic acid | Skin Type: Oily, acne-prone | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Size: 4 ounces | SPF: No

Who It's For

Best if you have oily, acne-prone skin and need a budget-friendly option.

Why We Love It

Like our top pick, Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Acne Facial Moisturizer moisturizes skin without feeling greasy or oily. This cream's key ingredient is acne-fighting salicylic acid, which actively exfoliates your skin while still providing hydration. It also proved to be as lightweight and fast-absorbing as our best overall choice, absorbing in under 15 minutes.

Since the moisturizer is oil-free, it’s particularly great for oily skin, Galaria says. And during testing, we felt the same: The moisturizer reduced oiliness while making our skin feel smoother and more hydrated. It quickly jumped to the top of our list because it really wowed us with its ability to moisturize and exfoliate simultaneously. Plus, you can get a 4-ounce bottle at a budget-friendly price.

Potential Flaws

  • Neutrogena warns that the moisturizer can aggressively dry out your skin upon initial use. While we didn't encounter this problem during testing, it's worth noting, especially for those with sensitive skin.

Who It's For

Best if you have dry skin and want an affordable drugstore option.

Why We Love It

You can find a great moisturizer at your local drugstore, Galaria says. And after trying CeraVe’s Moisturizing Cream, we agree. Made with hyaluronic acid and three different ceramides, this product hydrates and locks in moisture. And it works in a snap: After applying this cream, our skin immediately felt softer and more plump. Plus, it felt just as great at the 15-minute check-in.

The cream never leaves behind a film or makes our skin feel greasy, so it's good for layering under makeup. And while it’s suitable for all skin types (including sensitive skin), it’s one of Galaria’s favorites for dry skin. The moisturizer is also one of the most budget-friendly options on our list.

Potential Flaws

  • This product is not cruelty-free and we know that's a dealbreaker for many people.

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid | Skin Type: Normal, dry, oily, combination, mature | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Size: 1.7 ounces | SPF: No

Who It's For

Best if you have mature skin and need rapid, intense moisture.

Why We Love It

Glow Recipe’s Plum Plump Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer promises hydrating results in as little as three days. But we found that it worked even faster: Just 15 minutes after applying the moisturizer, our skin looked and felt more hydrated. Made of hyaluronic and polyglutamic acid, the gel-textured cream locks in moisture. And we love that you can save money and packaging by refilling the product instead of replacing it.

The gel felt slightly sticky right after applying, but it was absorbed within minutes. It then moisturized our skin, giving us a dewy glow and a bouncy, plump feel. And since it proved so hydrating, we think it's an excellent choice for dry, mature skin. That said, the moisturizer is suitable for various skin types (like dry, combination, and oily skin)—and we'd recommend it to anyone.

Potential Flaws

Who It's For

Best if you prioritize clean beauty, especially when addressing dry skin with a blend of purity and effective hydration.

Why We Love It

Then I Met You’s Renewing Rich Beauty Cream relies on all-natural hydrators, like ginseng, squalane, baobab, and hyaluronic acid. And it quickly delivers impressive results. Our skin was noticeably more hydrated just 15 minutes after applying the cream. And the driest parts of our face (our forehead and chin) saw the biggest difference: The cream boosted moisture by 36% to 47%, according to our moisture meter reading.

Despite its richness, the cream maintains a non-greasy and lightweight feel, catering to dry, combination, and sensitive skin. We also love that it's vegan and cruelty-free, with no alcohol, parabens, artificial colors, or fragrances. It's pricey, but the moisturizer is worth the investment, especially if you want something truly natural.

Potential Flaws

  • This moisturizer may be a bit too thick and rich for oily skin.

Who It's For

Best for people who need lightweight hydration combined with sun protection.

Why We Love It

La Roche-Posay’s Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer is one of Galaria’s favorites—and after testing, we can see why. Formulated with niacinamide and ceramide NP, this moisturizer not only hydrates but also effectively seals in moisture. What sets it apart is its dual functionality as an SPF 30 sunscreen, perfect for your outdoor activities.

Unlike many sun-protective moisturizers that tend to feel creamy or heavy, this one boasts a truly lightweight texture. Non-comedogenic in nature, it won't clog your pores. Our tests revealed quick absorption, leaving no trace of grease, oil, or residue behind. With its impressive dual benefits and an attractive price point, this moisturizer stands out for its remarkable value.

Who It's For

Best for anyone with very dry skin in need of intense moisture.

Why We Love It

DHC’s Olive Virgin Oil Essential Cream works wonders on dry and dehydrated skin. Made with olive oil, it delivers deep moisture for even cracked and flaky skin. Within 15 minutes, the moisturizer made our dry skin feel hydrated and dewy. It even seemed to fill in fine lines, giving our skin a plumper, almost-retouched look. Though the moisturizer is thick and creamy, we found it easy to apply and fast-absorbing.

At first, we were nervous about trying an oil-based product, but this one thoroughly impressed us—and we’d change nothing about it. Sure, it doesn’t suit as many skin types as our other favorites, but it does the trick if you’re looking for a moisturizer that can combat serious dryness.

Potential Flaws

  • Oil-based moisturizers like this are not ideal for oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Because this product is so oily, we recommend wearing a workout headband to keep it out of your hair.

Taking it a step further, this lightweight moisturizer incorporates leopard lily, a key ingredient that actively reduces skin oil levels. It also includes unique ingredients, like wild rose, green tea, rice, and algae extract, for effective hydration and toning.

We loved wearing this cream—it soaked in quickly, and it nearly doubled the moisture in our skin. While it did intensify the oiliness in our already oily skin, the result was a dewy and hydrated feel without the annoyance of shine or grease. The product exudes a luxurious look and feel, making it an excellent choice if you're willing to indulge in premium skincare.

Potential Flaws

  • This moisturizer is very pricey for its size, and we wish the bottle were larger. Still, we think it's a splurge-worthy investment.

Plus, the lotion went on smoothly and left behind no color cast, even when tested on darker skin tones.

It also contains salicylic acid, an acne-fighting ingredient that both Galaria and King recommend for clearing your pores. We also love that it’s fragrance-free and appreciate the budget-friendly price.

During our test, the moisturizer proved lightweight, easy to apply, and fast-absorbing. And it balanced out our skin, boosting moisture by 22% while reducing oil by 7%. Who It's For

Best for those with combination skin who don't mind splurging on a top-quality moisturizer.

Why We Love It

SkinCeuticals’ Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 may be the priciest product on our list, but it worked wonders when we tested it on combination skin. The moisturizer balanced out the oiliest parts of our face, making them look matte rather than shiny. And it hydrated all our dry spots, boosting moisture by 5%, according to our moisture meter.

We love that it's packed with ingredients that smooth and hydrate skin—like ceramides 1 and 3, natural cholesterol, fatty acids, and essential oils. And it feels like a lightweight gel, blending into our skin without leaving behind grease or residue. In testing, we were impressed with how soft, hydrated, balanced, and refreshed our skin felt.

Potential Flaws

Key Specs

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, peptides, pomegranate spheres | Skin Type: Normal, dry, oily, combination | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Size: 1.7 ounces | SPF: No

Who It's For

Best if you prefer sustainable products and have dry or combination skin.

Why We Love It

Tata Harper’s Water-Lock Refillable Moisturizer is lightweight, effective, and easy to wear daily. Made with hyaluronic acid, peptides, and pomegranate spheres, the moisturizer hydrates and smooths out your skin. We found it soaked in quickly, giving us a dewy glow in minutes. And though it boosted the amount of oil and moisture in our already-oily skin, it didn’t leave us greasy.

After 15 minutes of wearing the moisturizer, our skin looked brighter, fuller, and more hydrated. It also felt a lot softer. What makes this moisturizer truly stand out? It's refillable: Once you've used it up, simply replenish the 1.7-ounce tub instead of discarding it. We love this sustainable approach for its convenience in saving both packaging and money.

Potential Flaws

  • Even though it didn't leave a greasy feeling, this moisturizer increased the amount of oil on our face, so it may not be good for oily or acne-prone skin.

Face Moisturizers We Also Tested

We tested 64 face moisturizers for dry and oily skin, but not all of them made our list. While these five didn't make the final cut, we did find some noteworthy features:

  • We like that you can use Weleda’s Skin Food Moisturizer on your body and face, especially for extremely dry skin. However, we found the cream thick and tough to apply. Because of this, we were also a bit concerned about how it would layer under makeup or sunscreen.
  • First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream left our skin feeling hydrated, boosting our moisture levels by 11% to 31%. But it felt heavy and greasy, feeling more like a night cream than an everyday moisturizer.
  • Drunk Elephant’s Lala Retro Whipped Cream increased our skin's hydration by 9% to 23% during our test. However, the heavy and greasy texture meant it took a while to fully absorb into our skin. Given the premium price, we'd rather invest in a cream that absorbs more efficiently.
  • Although Glossier's After Baume Cream left our skin feeling hydrated, it became oily and greasy, taking a while to fully absorb. We’d happily use the moisturizer to spot-treat dry patches, but it felt too heavy for everyday wear.
  • We put Shiseido’s Waso Mega Hydrating Moisturizer to the test on oily skin. While it did prove hydrating, it unfortunately left our skin feeling even oilier. The moisturizer was also slow-absorbing and prone to pilling, but we think it may be effective for combating excessive dryness.

Where We Stand

After testing 64 face moisturizers, Vanicream's Daily Facial Moisturizer is our clear favorite because it's lightweight, fast-absorbing, and suitable for a variety of skin types. We also like that it's fragrance-free, good for sensitive skin, and available at a budget-friendly price. As we continue to test face moisturizers at home, we will update our list with any new recommendations.

What to Look for When Shopping for Face Moisturizers

  • Ingredients: To find a face moisturizer that won’t clog your pores, look for something with non-comedogenic ingredients. Our experts specifically recommend ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, and squalane because they moisturize your skin without clogging pores. They also recommend avoiding comedogenic (pore-clogging) ingredients, like coconut oil, cocoa butter, and lanolin. If you’re especially prone to clogged pores, you may also want a moisturizer made with pore-clearing ingredients, like salicylic acid.
  • Skin Type: The four most common skin types are normal, dry, oily, and combination. Normal skin feels balanced, dry skin gets tight and flaky, oily skin is greasy and shiny, and combination skin often gets oily in the T-zone (along the forehead and nose). Finding the right moisturizer for your skin type and lifestyle may take some trial and error, says dermatologist Gloria Lin, MD, FAAD. But generally, the dermatologists we spoke to recommend heavier creams for dry skin, oil-free moisturizers for oily skin, and combination products for combination skin.
  • Moisturizer Type: Moisturizers typically contain three types of ingredients: humectants, occlusives, and emollients. Humectants (like hyaluronic acid) attract water and hydrate your skin. Occlusives (like beeswax) form a protective layer that seals in moisture. And emollients (like vitamin E) smooth out and support your skin. Great moisturizers contain a combination of these ingredients, King says. And you can find non-comedogenic versions of each.
  • Size and Price: You don’t have to splurge to score a great moisturizer, Galaria says. And we agree. During our test, we found great moisturizers at every price point—from drugstore to high-end options. When considering price, be sure to note the size of a moisturizer. Some are much bigger than others, and a 12-ounce tub for $18 is a better buy than a 1.5-ounce tube for $9.
  • Additional Features: Humectants are ingredients that help hydrate the skin by attracting water molecules from the dermis like a magnet, drawing them closer to the epidermis to create that moisture barrier. They make your skin look less flaky and cracked and encourage the shedding of dead cells. Popular natural humectants include hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, alpha hydroxy acid, and honey. Popular synthetic humectants include butylene glycol, urea, and glycerin. Emollients are ingredients that help smooth and soften the skin by repairing cracks in the skin barrier and preventing water loss. Emollients work best when paired with humectants. Common emollients include cocoa butter, shea butter, oils like olive oil, and colloidal oatmeal. People with different skin types and lifestyles prefer different weights—usually lighter products for morning use and heavier products for evening and overnight use.

How We Tested the Face Moisturizers

To simplify your search for a great face moisturizer, we put 64 face moisturizers to the test in The Verywell Testing Lab and at home. We tested 29 moisturizers for oily skin and 35 moisturizers for dry skin. When testing moisturizers, we evaluated each one based on the following key categories:

  • Texture: To test the texture of each face moisturizer, we note how it feels on our skin: Is it sticky? Is it thick or lightweight? Does it feel gritty or smooth? We also pay attention to how easily it spreads and rubs into our skin.
  • Absorption: During our testing, we actively assess each face moisturizer's absorption by measuring the time it takes for the product to be fully absorbed into the skin. We also take note of whether it leaves any sticky or greasy residue, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of its performance.
  • Dryness or Oiliness: To evaluate this category, we first cleanse and dry our faces. Then, we use a moisture meter to measure the initial moisture and oil levels of our skin. After applying the moisturizer, we wait for 15 minutes and re-record moisture and oil levels. We document the percentage changes to indicate the product's effectiveness in addressing dryness or oiliness.
  • Appearance: Next, we actively observe the post-application appearance of each product on our skin: Does it leave a tint or visible residue? We also take note of any fragrance and whether it's pleasant or overpowering.
  • Value: To give each face moisturizer an accurate value score, we look at the cost of the product after testing is complete. Moisturizers that receive a high overall score typically align with or cost less than what we deem reasonable, considering their performance in the key categories mentioned above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it good to moisturize your face every day?

To keep your skin hydrated and healthy, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends using moisturizer and sunscreen daily. This is especially true if you have dry or mature skin. If you’re prone to dry skin, the AAD says you may want to moisturize as often as twice a day.

Should I moisturize my face at night or in the morning?

Dermatologists recommend moisturizing your face after it’s been cleansed—like right after you wash your face or shower, both at night or in the morning.

What happens when you don't moisturize your face?

If you don't moisturize, you'll miss out on benefits such as hydrating your skin, supporting your skin barrier, and sealing in moisture, King says. Without moisturizer, your skin may dry out—especially if you have already dry or mature skin.

What is the most effective face moisturizer?

The most suitable face moisturizer for you will depend on your individual needs and skin type. We offer recommendations tailored to different skin concerns, including options for dry and acne-prone skin. If you're uncertain, opt for a moisturizer that's versatile for all skin types, feels fast-absorbing, and aligns with your budget.
