I never thought I’d love to work out at home. As a self-proclaimed fitness class fanatic, I tried everything New York City’s bustling fitness environment had to offer: SLT, Tracy Anderson, Pure Barre, Exhale’s CoreFusion, Chaise Fitness, SoulCycle, FlyWheel, Equinox’s myriad of options…you get the idea. For over a decade, if I wasn’t running outside, you could find me on a mat, bike, or reformer at a boutique fitness studio somewhere in the city.

Then came one kid, COVID, another kid, and a demanding job…working out at home became the only option. I traded my ClassPass and class credits for my favorite mat, a collection of dumbbells, and a set of resistance bands.

Now that the world is open again, I choose to work out at home. It’s convenient, less expensive, conserves time, AND I enjoy it more. Maybe it’s the germ-phobe in me, but gone are the days when a packed room and shared equipment are an appealing way to spend my limited free time. 

It’s worth noting that how I work out at home has evolved. At first, I relied solely on my Peloton to stream cycling classes. Over time, I’ve tuned inward and found a mix of streaming barre, yoga, and strength classes that complement my cardio habits. I’ve even dipped my toes into jumping rope and rebounding (my kids aren’t the only ones who can enjoy a trampoline)!

While I’ve found my groove in the comfort of my own home, I understand that many people struggle to find motivation without a physical class commitment or community. Perhaps you’re one of those people—and that’s ok—I thought I was!
